The notorious Golden Crescent and its Implications

Afganistan- called the Golden Crescent in International Narcotics Trade, as of March, 2010, is the largest producer of Narcotics- Opium, Heroin and Hashish (Charas) and contributes 92% of the total world production, from where it is smuggled worldwide. Narcotics production in Afghanistan has been on the rise since U.S. occupation started in 2001, is much higher than in any one year during the Taliban rule (UNODC Data) and is presently estimated at US $ 4 Billion per annum. With only a quarter of it is being earned by opium farmers, the rest goes to the Mafias of insurgents, warlords and drug traffickers. Unfortunately, Pakistan, since the Afghan War in 1989, had suffered a huge influx of drugs due to porous borders with Afghanistan and has presently the highest number of drug addicts in the world, 5 Million. To deal with this International Threat Government of Pakistan created the Anti Narcotics Force (ANF) in Feb 1995. Click on the ANF Link below for details.
